Boilers for heating water were fired by coke and/or coal. The solid fuel was stored in coke and coal yards that were completed on 15 July 1941.
To reduce wasting water, on Friday 25 April 1941 Major Lloyd Owen, Commanding Officer, issued strict orders to ensure "... that the greatest economy in water be affected." For example
- Slipper baths were "... prohibited in normal barracks bath houses where showers ..." were installed.
- Although it was not intended to limit the number of times individuals showered, it was "... essential that a rigid supervision of the use of showers be undertaken."
- Large shower roses were replaced with smaller "Benn sprays".
- Leaking taps had to "... be reported at once to the Garrison Engineer."
- "Washing under running tap water ..." was "... strictly forbidden".
- Automatic flushing of urinals was restricted to "... once every two hours."
- "Supervision of water points ..." was "... included in the duties of regimental police."
- When exercising a fire practice, "only the minimum expenditure of water ..." was "... used to carry out an effective test."
