B 52219 Private FL WaynerLorne Scots (Peel, Dufferin and Halton Regiment) 2 March 1943 Age 32
On 6 March Lt. Col. Lent (then commanding 1 NETD) wrote to Private Wayner's wife:
Dear Mrs Wayner, You will have heard by now the news of the tragic death of your husband, a loss which must be made greater through occurring so far from home. I wish to offer you my deepest sympathy.
Frank was buried at Three O'Clock this afternoon in Brookwood cemetery. Brookwood is the cemetery where Canadians in the last war, as in this, have been laid to rest. A special part of it is laid aside for Canadians. It is a large cemetery near Woking in Surrey, not far from London.
The coffin was borne by eight of his friends, and the service was conducted by Hon. Capt. McNeill, United Church Chaplain to the Forces. The Last Post and Reveille were sounded over the grave by Pte. WV Wright of the Lorne Scots. The pallbearers were: L/Cpl. H Kingsley, L/Cpl. J Stephens, Pte. RJ Jarvis, Pte. L Reece, Pte. AA McMullen, Pte. J Howey, Pte. J Norton and Pte. WO Gravowski.
At the inquest yesterday the Coroner returned a verdict of "Accidental Death". Your husband's personal effects are being sent to Officer i/c Estates; he will forward them to you in due course.
Frank has been with us at this unit since August last year and he will be missed by many friends he had made here. At the time of his death he had been working in the Officers' Mess and the sincerity with which he was regarded by his fellow soldiers was shown today by the number of officers, mess staff and others at the funeral. He was liked by all who came in contact with him.
If there is any more information I can give you about the funeral or about Frank himself, please let me know.
(Signed) RW Lent, Lt. Col. Officer Commanding No. 1 Cdn. NETD (Lorne Scots)
