Brass Plaque Presented by the Lorne Scots to the Thursley Community

The plaque, or 'tablet' as recorded in the 1 Non-Effective Transit Depot War Diaries, was presented to the Thursley community on 10 January 1943 (see photograph below).

Brass plaque

It reads,

"Erected as a mark of appreciation by Lt. Colonel Louis Keene, ED, Officers and Men of the Lorne Scots of Canada, who worshipped in this church during the Second World War."

Summary of the Occasion

  • The service started with the hymn "Oh God, Our Help in Ages Past".
  • The Vicar, Rev. HG French MA, read the prayers.
  • The lesson was read by Captain GW Bullock from 1 Kings, Chapter 8.
  • "Te Deum" was sung by all.
  • The Vericles were said by the Senior Chaplain, Hon. Major H Stewart.
  • Hymn "Onward Christian Soldiers" was sung followed by the unveiling and dedication of the tablet by The Right Reverend John Victor Macmillan D.D. (Bishop of Guildford). Hon. Captain C. Storey, Chaplain to the Unit, was the Bishop's chaplain for this occasion.
  • The Bishop gave an "inspiring" address.

Inside Church The plaque was positioned underneath a timber arch as indicated by a white arrow in the photograph opposite.

Other than the laying of a green patterned carpet, the interior of St Michael's Church has changed little since the Lorne Scots Regiment worshipped there during WWII.
